WTF: China Eastern’s Asinine Compensation For Killing A Dog – And More!

A three-year-old dog has died in the hands of China Eastern, whose job was to transport it between Guangzhou and Wuhan. Incidents happen – United killed a rabbit named Simon that was slated to become the world’s biggest only a month prior – but the way the airline’s handling this incident is beyond ridiculous.

Doudou, the Golden Retriever that died in the hands of the airline, attempted to escape, causing the barbed wire cage to tear him apart. He didn’t last long due to the injuries that he received, and he died shortly after.

QUICK REPORT: China Eastern A321 Skids Off Hong Kong Airport Runway

I apologise for the lack of posts lately – on the plus side, both Jason and I had our birthdays throughout the past while, which means we’re one step closer to our goal of a career involving flying, but on the minus side, both the weather and our schedules have been absolutely depressing.

On that note, last Wednesday marked Hong Kong’s latest black rain signal, and as all of you probably know, that’s not great news for airports. It certainly wasn’t great news for Hong Kong Airport, as a China Eastern plane skidded off runway 25R, closing that runway and severely delaying flights arriving and departing Hong Kong Airport.

I arrived the airport extra early on Tuesday, February 9th, in hopes of checking out both the Midfield Terminal and the SkyTeam Lounge.

I made my way down the escalators, and found myself near the entrance, which was spacious, and featured a huge screen featuring landscape views, which seems to be the norm in SkyTeam lounges.

China Eastern Makes A B*tch Move!

Back in May, I flew China Eastern from Hong Kong to Kunming to Lijiang roundtrip. While my enjoyment was mostly out of my friends and less on the flight itself, the flight was a pleasant way to get around for a few hours.

IMG_6622

Following that was a bit of kerfuffle when my teacher had our e-ticket details, yet I wanted to redeem the flight to SkyPass. While I waited for the miles to credit, they never came. SkyPass tried to contact China Eastern, but you know the problems when airlines try to contact each other.

My Thanksgiving

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, though it wasn’t this morning until I realised so. Many people thank their friends and family during Thanksgiving, so I will too, but particularly my family, as they’re the biggest supporters of me while I’m travelling (and while I’m not, but especially when I’m travelling).

Ethics of Qatar Airways going 10 abreast in economy

Being an economy traveller for some amount of time (I used to be 365-day-a-year economy all the way, but I’ve had some luck with fares lately), I know my way around what’s important and what’s not in an economy seat. My favourite economy seat has adequate padding, width, TV, USB gadgets, recline and everything you need in an economy seat to survive, and it’s Cathay Pacific/Dragonair’s new economy seat (for those complaining, I find Singapore’s to be less well padded, I haven’t tried Emirates’ A380 seat nor have I tried Garuda’s seat).

At around 8AM we arrived Lijiang Airport, where we were directed into the international terminal for check-in.

We were stopped at the jetbridge, as apparently there was a quarrel on the aircraft.

Apparently boarding began on time for the passengers going from Kunming to Lijiang, and the sole business class passenger was starting to lose it as we took a little longer than expected to clear immigration. China Eastern isn’t used to 38 people taking both legs of the flight, and by the time we arrived at the aircraft, it should’ve landed at Lijiang. The delay was partially to blame, but it was also the way things turned out.

IMG_5113

The cabin temperature was substantially cooler, and I had refilled with ice cold water from Kunming, though the flight attendants went around passing out bottles of water.

We arrived at Hong Kong Airport at 2:00, and waited a bit at check-in. There was no queue whatsoever, and we were in quickly.

IMG_5033

China Eastern Check-in Hong Kong Airport

I had an aisle seat next to two friends (albeit one being across the aisle), so that was great news for me.

Our flight was departing from the satellite terminal. For those of you not familiar, Hong Kong Airport has 66 jet bridge gates (numbered 1-4, 15-71 and and 501-510) and eight remote stands (numbered 511-513 and 521-525), and while most of these are located in the main terminal, gates 501-510 are positioned at the North Satellite Concourse, a three minute bus from the main terminal. We passed immigration and decided to head directly there.

The views from the bus at this time of day are excellent, especially when we were on it, right when the Singapore Airlines A380 was pushing back.
