As Jason has quite a bit to do these days and I’m off for Easter break, I decided I’d stall his report and roll my own Phuket trip report out, to make things quick.

I had been missing the beach lately. I mean, I got used to the cold around in Hong Kong, and was really looking for some warmth.

In our family getaway plans, Vietnam seemed kinda dangerous for us (as they were having problems with the Chinese then), Japan was a “been there done that” place after we went in August (my family still has understandable problems with radiation), China was a complete clusterf*ck during the New Years and four days (our timeframe, between completing Chinese New Year traditions and me going back to school) wasn’t enough for anywhere else, so after thinking a bit, we decided on Phuket, Thailand.

Phuket, Thailand

Originally my parents wanted to take Dragonair to Phuket, but with my sister’s hatred for narrowbodies, I suggested THAI to Phuket, which I find an airline I’ve always been intrigued in. My parents agreed, and with the better timing and the fact that business class prices on THAI were basically similar to economy class prices on Dragonair, we decided THAI was worth a try for the short flight.

After all, if THAI didn’t float our boat(s), would only 2,849 miles in the seat be too bad? 😉

Weekend with the Mosquitoes Flight Routing

In the end, our flight routing was as follows:

20/2 TG 609 HKG – HKT 10:25 – 12:55 333 J
23/2 TG 608 HKT – HKG 14:45 – 19:15 333 J

Apart from being my first time in (cheap) paid business class and my first time in a Star Alliance premium cabin, it was also my first time in an angled lie flat seat, and I was pumped (okay, it is a bit weird that I’m a travel blogger and I haven’t tried an angle lie flat seat, but hey, economy FTW).

On the hotel front, I originally decided to search up Starwood, Hyatt, Hilton or IHG hotels, and despite really wanting to stay at The Naka Island Phuket, the rates were up the roof, so with a 65% discount we stayed at The Bell Phuket, a standalone hotel located two minutes from Kamala Beach.

At the 65% discount rate, prices were about over HK$4000, which is pretty reasonable given that it was shared between two families (we went with my sister’s friends).

On the very front end of the trip, my mom wanted to stay at The Beas River Chalet, for their Valentine’s Day dinner, which we all obliged to. Rates were a little higher than the last time we stayed, but HK$1000 still isn’t that much for a hotel room, even in the outskirts of Hong Kong.
