~HK$980 Roundtrip Fares to Kaohsiung

I’m a fan of cheap airplane tickets, as I don’t earn that much money myself (remember, I’m still a student without a scholarship). A few days ago I updated on the best ways to get from Colombo to Hong Kong upfront for less than the price of an economy class ticket to Singapore.

Today, a friend emailed me today and realised that there were economy class seats to Kaohsiung near the start of June, selling for merely ~HK$700.

I can’t take advantage of that as school is still in session, but it’s worth noting that this fare is mostly in through the Hong Kong schools examination period, which explains the low fares.

Note that on some dates the price increases basically sixfold, which are basically the weekend dates.

Including government taxes, the prices increases slightly to HK$979, which is a hell of a deal for a flight on a PTV equipped Airbus A330-300 up to Kaohsiung.

(Note that while I flew Dragonair’s old economy class product to Kaohsiung, they no longer offer PTV-less economy class on their Airbus A330s, so the flight is either run on Dragonair’s plush new economy class, or their substantial shell seats (there’s really not a way to tell what you’re getting, but it’s close enough for a short flight, given both seats have PTVs).

I mean, I’d call HK$979 a substantial rate for Dragonair’s old economy class, which doesn’t have PTVs, but at least does the job for a short hour-long flight. That said, this product doesn’t exit anymore in my understanding, so there’s only a chance of getting, at worst, the shell seats, which are also equipped with AVOD.

Of course, business class is available, but prices increase twelvefold, going for ~HK$8,570.

Is it worth the extra comfort? I don’t think so, and I’ve tried the product.
