Finnair’s Nordic Sky WiFi

I flew Finnair (yes, for the third year in a row) to Europe. While I won’t be reviewing my flights, I’ll be writing some posts about my experiences. On my flights, I had the chance to check out their Nordic Sky portal on both my long-haul flight from Bangkok to Helsinki and my regional connection from Helsinki to Prague. The portal was redesigned last year to make it more user-friendly, which rolled out along with new restrictions on WiFi usage on oneworld elite and Business Class passengers. With that in mind, I thought I’d review the internet service and the WiFi portal.

We made a beeline for the Finnair non-Schengen lounge after stepping off our flight from London. Given that the United Kingdom is part of the EU but isn’t part of the Schengen agreement, there was no need to clear immigration or security when connecting onward to our flight to Hong Kong, which was great.

We arrived at the lounge during Finnair’s afternoon departures rush, meaning that it was absolutely jam-packed. As such, I didn’t feel comfortable taking pictures and reviewing the lounge. After failing to find a seat, we left the lounge to do some shopping. I wish Finnair would either expand seating options in their lounges, given how serious of an issue overcrowding is in Finnair’s Helsinki lounges. I don’t think I’ve ever been inside a Finnair lounge that was empty.

Finnair operates out of London Heathrow’s Terminal 3, which is also used by American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Virgin Atlantic. We arrived at the airport a couple of hours before our flight and headed to Travelex’s VAT refund desk, which ended up giving Alvin’s VAT refund experience at Munich airport a run for his money, and resulted in us losing a couple hundred dollars’ worth of refunds. Anyways, I digress…

I decided to go check-in early while my mother was holed up at the VAT refund counter. For some reason, the agent refused to check all of the bags under my name and insisted that my mother had to be with me to check any of our bags.

Soon enough, my mother arrived and we were sent on our way through priority security which was a breeze. Although we had access to Cathay Pacific’s London Heathrow lounge, we were running a little tight on time so we did a bit of souvenir shopping.

We arrived at Helsinki Airport after a short walk from the Hilton Helsinki Airport around 70 minutes before departure. We headed straight for Finnair’s Priority counters to drop off our bags. However, because we were traveling during the summer holidays, there were quite a lot of people in line and it took a bit of time before we were helped by an agent.

The agent wasn’t the nicest, and we were soon sent on our way through priority security. We headed straight to our gate, as boarding had already started. However, we discovered that our gate area was one hot mess of people lining up in the hopes of boarding early. Eventually, Group 1 Priority boarding was called and we headed down the jetbridge.

We were welcomed by the Chief Purser standing by the door of our brand new Airbus A321.

We arrived at Bangkok Airport at 7:55, around 3 hours before the updated departure of our flight to Helsinki. As it turns out, the inbound flight had been held up at Helsinki Airport because of a mechanical issue, resulting in a 2-hour delay for our flight. The delay meant that we were going to be missing our onward connection, which you can read more about here.

Welcome to my next trip report, and I apologise that it’s taken so long. While some of the installments had been written shortly after I took the trip in July 2017, life happened, so I finished most of the other installments of the report over the past few days.

Last year, our family decided on going to the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg during the summer. My mother and I also took a week-long detour to spend some time with family in London, as well as to allow me to attend a summer camp. Meanwhile, my father had to head home straight from Amsterdam due to work.

Irregular Operations on Finnair: What Is It Like? What Should You Do?

On my recent trip to Europe, our flight from Bangkok to Helsinki was delayed for two hours, and we missed our connection on our onward flight from Helsinki to Bangkok. Here’s a recount of how Finnair handles irregular operations, as well as some tips as for what you should do in case this happens to you.

My Experience

Finnair sent out an email prior to departure informing my family that our flight to Helsinki had been delayed for two hours, and told us to arrive at the airport three hours prior to the new departure time.

What Is Finnair’s A350 Business Class Like?

I recently completed a trip to Europe on Finnair’s Business Class. I was able to fly from Bangkok to Helsinki to Amsterdam and from London to Helsinki to Hong Kong, due to a cheap business class fare. Here are some of my thoughts on the experience.

Screen Shot 2017-07-25 at 9.46.18 PM.png

I’d like to note that I flew from Bangkok to Helsinki to London and from Barcelona to Helsinki to Bangkok on Finnair last year, which featured the same onboard product. However, after flying them again, I’m back with updates on their service, new photos, etc.

Finnair Cuts Free WiFi In Business Class

I’m not sure when this was released, as Finnair has kept incredibly quiet about this, to the point where Jason found out through Finnair’s website when he was reading more into the product. It’s established on this site that Finnair offers one of the better business class products out there, as they have great service, great food, great reverse herringbone seats on most of their routes to Asia (those operated by the A350), great Marimekko amenity kits, as well as free WiFi for every business class passenger upon availability.

IMG_2698

However, it looks like one of the above amenities is being cut. As of now Finnair is no longer offering flight-long free WiFi for business class passengers. Instead, they are now offering one hour of unlimited free WiFi, then they’ll have to pay the standard rate after that.

OH NO: Finnair Cuts Free Business Class WiFi – A Rant

This is the literal definition of a first world problem. I’m still incredibly fortunate and glad to have been given the luxury of flying in Business Class, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little pissed by this.

Note from Alvin: I am not an affected individual of this travesty and will shortly provide a follow-up and objective report of this new change. 😉

Finnair no longer offers free full-flight WiFi in Business Class. Instead, passengers are only given one hour of free WiFi – after which you’re supposed to pay either €7.95 for 1 hour of access, €11.95 for 3 hours of access or €19.95 for whole flight access. Previously, passengers received free WiFi for multiple devices for the duration of the entire flight.
