For the first two nights we were booked into the Bayerischer Hof hotel, which is generally known as one of the best hotels in the area. Judging the prices that I outlined in the introduction, we seemed to be charged a substantial amount for our two nights at the Bayerischer Hof. I wasn’t thrilled about that, but it was a decision that my parents made, so I figured they’d have good reason behind that.
We pulled over across the Bayerischer Hof at around 4:30 PM after stopping by for lunch at Ammersee on the way from Munich Airport. The exterior of the hotel seems like it had been recently repainted, since it looked rather fresh for such an old hotel.

The lobby was small, though really elegantly decorated, despite the fact that the decor seemed way past its prime.

We checked in with the receptionist, who was friendly in a German way – she was direct and didn’t waste much time with unnecessarily complex hospitality vocabulary, which I was happy with. Soon we were assigned rooms 443 and 444, which weren’t connected, though were situated next to one another.

The main lift was broken that day, so we were escorted to another. The hallways on the fourth floor are alright – they’re bright and well-lit, though aren’t especially modern.

The hotel has somewhat of an L-shape as far as the rooms go, with the hallway shaped accordingly. Our rooms were situated on the short end of the L, which was a short walk from the elevator closest to the lobby.

Now, the funny thing is that I never understood what room we had been booked into. Judging the hotel’s website, basically everything seems to be named as a “comfort room”, and there are different types, with each one being unique and coming at its own price tag.
Our room featured an entryway, with access to the bathroom, walk-in closet, as well as the rest of the room.

The room itself was a great size for a European hotel, and featured a couple of sitting areas, two very comfortable beds put together with their individual duvets and pillows, as well as a desk and chair facing the window.

When I researched the hotel, I wasn’t a fan of the colour scheme that the hotel offered. It definitely isn’t my style, but at least everything was fresh and clean.

The sitting area was a good size and featured a sofa and two armchairs, all of which were comfortable.

The beds were some of the most comfortable beds I’ve encountered in a hotel, though I wasn’t a fan of the fact that they were pushed together. That was easy to handle, though, as I separated the beds easily (I normally wouldn’t care too much, except my dad snores like a tractor, so…)

On the other end the room there was another sofa, where I chose to work throughout the bulk of my stay. Speaking of working, the WiFi download speeds were fine, in that I could text people and surf the web without issue, though upload speeds were truly terrible.

Facing the balcony was a desk and chair. The chair didn’t seem especially comfortable, and it also faced away from the room. I prefer a setup where the desk faces the room, as I have a wall behind me.

The room also featured a rather huge walk-in closet, with a mirror, clothes hangers and a lot of storage space.

The bathroom was well-equipped and featured a sink, toilet towel heating rack, and separate shower and tub.

The gold handles were yet another sign of the hotel’s (slightly outdated) elegance, which I thought fit the hotel’s colour scheme perfectly.

Unfortunately I don’t have as great things to say about the shower – water pressure was mediocre at best, and you had to swipe very far left to get decently hot water.

The toiletries were hotel-branded and decent – they weren’t great by any means, though I didn’t hate them.

In terms of other things, I did appreciate that the room had an abundance of power ports – in a hotel of this age I understand if power ports aren’t universal, but that may be something to keep in mind if you do end up spending a few nights here.

I found almost all features of the room rather antiquated, including some of the lights – how many decades ago was this considered a fashionable light?

On the plus side, the room featured a stunning balcony. It wasn’t a very comfortable place to stay in and the weather was abysmal for most of our time back at the hotel so I didn’t end up using it that much, though views were great on a good day. I also found it nice how the cover above the balcony was retractable, so you can get your fill of sunlight if the weather’s nice and you don’t want to leave your room.

In terms of amenities, we were given free fruit, as well as a bottle of Teinacher sparkling water, which was nice on behalf of the hotel (unfortunately you only got one every night – every subsequent bottle would’ve set us back EUR 4.80). My throat was sore so I barely had the chance to drink any of the sparkling water, but otherwise I’d have gone to town.

Overall, the room was a great size, which I appreciated. While I personally found the decor way past its prime, that’s something that I knew going in, so I was more impressed to find the room in mint condition, which I wasn’t expecting.
My mother and Hailey received another room type, which I found intriguing, as this room featured stairs. It also featured a sitting area, the same comfortable bed, a desk and chair and a TV. I found the pictured armchair below rather oddly placed, as you’d just awkwardly be looking down on the room.

While I can appreciate antiquated design sometimes when it’s part of the hotel’s colour scheme, the headboard design was a bit too much for me.

While my sister enjoyed that there were stairs in her hotel room, I would’ve found them rather impractical, as it’s essentially wasted space. The room also featured a vaulted ceiling as it was on the top floor, so you’d have to be careful in order to not hit your head if you were trying to look out of the window.

Our room was one of the only rooms with a balcony. My mom’s room didn’t have a balcony, instead only featuring a window that actually jutted out of the hotel’s roof.

If I had the choice I would’ve chosen my room, though I guess it’s nice that the hotel gives you the option to choose your individual room. I found my mother’s room less well appointed, and the “floral” decor was also a little bit way too much for me.
In terms of what else the hotel offers, there’s merchandise on display by the hallways, which seems like a common practice in smaller German hotels.

There’s also an indoor and outdoor pool. I didn’t manage to snag a picture of the indoor pool, though the outdoor pool seemed slightly dirty (I did like the area surrounding it, though).

For what it’s worth there’s also a gym, situated on the third floor of the hotel.

I wasn’t planning to work out due to how sick I was. Perfect timing, as the equipment at this hotel was severely limited. I can understand if there aren’t fitness balls or anything, but the lack of dumbbells and a treadmill seemed like an oversight.

There’s also a spa located on the fourth floor, though none of us ever ended up using it.

Breakfast at the hotel was served at one of the hotel’s restaurants. The breakfast spread itself was limited, though everything that I had was delicious, so it receives high marks for quality. The spread itself was pretty much continental, featuring bread, yoghurt, cold cuts, etc.

There was also wine at the breakfast spread, which I found amusing.

Service at breakfast was great – we arrived rather late the first morning and the main dining area was rather full, so the attendant escorted us to a partitioned area where we had our breakfast both mornings (it was open to begin with on the second morning). I ordered a mint tea for breakfast on the first day, which was fine as far as mint tea goes.

I can say the same about the service at the hotel in general – the front desk agent was rather gruff and she gave us wrong information at times. On the first night we just wanted dinner somewhere convenient, so the front desk agent booked us into the hotel’s affiliated restaurant, which (surprise!) isn’t the restaurant directly linked to the hotel. The restaurant itself was meh, so we wanted to try out the restaurant directly connected to the hotel on the second night, which the agent initially said she had successfully booked us into. Unfortunately she’d just booked us into the same restaurant, though we still found somewhere great to eat that night.
Lindau itself was gorgeous. Directly outside the hotel you’d be able to find this view – amazing!

Bottom Line: Hotel Bayerischer Hof Lindau
Overall I thought the hotel was rather nice for our two-night stay in Lindau. While I didn’t appreciate the colour scheme, I knew that coming in, and the hotel does have somewhat of a history, so I was fine dealing with it for two nights. While internet wasn’t great, I wasn’t expecting too much more for a local hotel in a non-major town with a target tourist demographic of 60+-year-old German couples.
I’m a little confused as to the price point, though, as in my understanding the two rooms collectively cost over HK$9,000+/night. I doubt we actually paid that much, though HK$4,500 for one of these rooms is something I’d never go for. I spotted a couple of cheaper options when researching hotels in Lindau on my own, so I guess we’ll stick to those if we do end up revisiting Lindau. However, I did enjoy my stay here.
