Review: The Beas River Chalet (Hong Kong)

Home » Reviews » Hotel Reviews » Review: The Beas River Chalet (Hong Kong)

For those who I’ve told, this is from my November stay of the hotel. My February stay will come with the rest of the Phuket trip report.

As a member of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, we get consistent, free access to the Beas River Country Club. As a smaller child I had even stayed at their Beijing property, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Clubhouse Beijing.

What I didn’t know was that their country club had chalets for rent as well. Reading more, I noticed that the Beas River Country Club has pretty low cost chalet-style rooms for rent from HK$600-HK$1000 (US$77-US$130). For more reviews on the site and a spare weekend, we decided to spend a night.

Booking the Beas River Chalet

The Beas River Chalet has a standard twin bedroom and two Beas River Suites, in my understanding. As we were travelling with another family, we booked two interconnecting twin bedrooms, which the hotel offers at no extra price.

My stay at the Beas River Chalet

We pulled up to the Beas River Chalet at about 7pm, after accidentally taking a detour to Disneyland (wrong lane on highway). Our friends had already checked us in, but it’s a quick experience at LEVADE, the hotel’s reception and also its shop.

The exterior of the chalet is pretty authentic, in which it looks like one of those 1560 European chalets you’d find in places.

There are two buildings, one with rooms 1-16 and the other with rooms 17-32. There is a suite in each building for reasonable prices, but unfortunately availability wasn’t as good as we hoped.

We were assigned rooms 31 and 32 in the second tower (closer to the main building, so fine with me), which in my understanding are the only interconnecting rooms in the hotel.

The hallways are somewhat a cross between minimalist and countryside, which I loved.

The room featured an entryway in wooden finishes, which I liked.

The room was stunning, in my opinion, and while I’ve generally had good luck with nice looking hotel rooms this year, this one was really one of the better ones I’ve had. It featured two moderately comfortable beds, a comparatively rock hard rollaway (which was given for a price), a chaise longue, a desk with an ergonomic chair and a flatscreen TV.

The pillows on each bed were substantially squishy.

There were some photos of the country club’s past, which looked pretty nice along with the rest of the room.

I like how the desk faced the window and not the beds, so not everyone sees what you’re doing (of course, if you’re single, that’s fine, but if you’re with a family and you need to have some “private time”…) 😉

On the desk was also a phone and a notepad. Given that this isn’t a business hotel, I wasn’t too sure why the latter was necessary.

There was also an alarm clock, though the charger on the top was definitely not an iPhone 5+ charger as my phone didn’t fit in there.

There were also some classy cups and plates. Not that you wouldn’t expect that in a normal hotel, but for a ~HK$600 hotel I was damn impressed.

There were free apples and oranges, a paid minibar and some snacks which I think were paid but I’m not too sure.

There was also free tea, which I appreciated.

The bathroom was also big and impressive, and featured a sink, a toilet in a separate room and a walk-in shower.

It’s worth noting that the hotel only offers tubs in suites, and not in their standard rooms; it’s simply a (massive) walk-in shower with a glass partition.

There was even a chair, though I don’t think it’s for turbulence, unlike that of the Emirates Airbus A380.

The shower featured Muguet D’Ogive toiletries, which were pretty good, though not memorable (for anyone that thinks that memorable toiletries are a stupid idea, I do currently own Asprey Purple Water toiletries in my bathroom).

Overall, the room greatly exceeded my expectations.

In terms of the hotel’s facilities, you get access to all the club’s facilities, including the basketball court (for arrangement), the pavilion (for arrangement), a biking trail, a few playgrounds, and the hotel’s two restaurants. We visited the biking trail on the second day, and while I’ve visited it hundreds of times, I took a few photos of it to add to the review.

We had dinner on the night at the hotel’s restaurant, Horseshoe Grill, and they were doing a foie gras special, which made for a very rich dinner.

I had the onion soup for starters, which was cheesy, maybe not enough so.

I had the roast chicken with gnocchi for main course, which was a disappointment. The chicken was really dry, and while the gnocchi were like little pillows, there were only three of them on the plate. No, not three scoops, but three pieces of gnocchi, one on each side of the plate.

Fortunately, I ordered a chocolate soufflé for dessert, which made up for the main course. It was delicious (not that you can ever go wrong with a soufflé).

Breakfast is not included with the rate, so we had breakfast at the food court.

I ordered an egg white omelet which was simple but really tasty.

IMG_9308

I also ordered an iced lemon tea, which you can’t really go wrong with. It was really good for what it was.

In terms of the hotel’s other facilities, there’s also a playroom and a closed pool, neither of which I visited this time.

IMG_9302

Service at the hotel was great for what they had, since most of the hotel is outdoors and not staffed (after all, it’s a country club). All staff we interacted with were friendly, and smiled, and did their job really well.

Bottom line on the Beas River Chalet Hong Kong

Did it blow me away? No.

That said, the Beas River Chalet is a great choice for people who want to just spend a night out in the wilderness, especially the biking trail, which was beautiful. The rooms are nice and usually pretty cheap, and the facilities are fine.

I’d like to try out the Beas River Suite next time, especially given how luxurious it looks from the outside, or possibly the Starlit Camp, which is a room with two tatamis and a tent with three mattresses.
