Review: Atria Hotel Gading Serpong (Jakarta, Indonesia)

In terms of hotel options, our hotel booked us into the Atria Hotel Gading Serpong. Despite being generally cheap, the hotel is really reputable around the Tangerang region, so I was excited to check the property out. It’s worth noting that the hotel also has a Residences wing which was booked for a few groups that were traveling as part of SEAMC, so this review is only relevant for those staying at the hotel.

The exterior of the hotel is stunning, as it’s modern and has a (semi-transparent) tree structure mounted along its facade. This makes the hotel look amazing, though unfortunately it obstructs the views from some rooms along the left side of the hotel.

We were welcomed into a reception area, though I’m not sure if it serves a purpose normally. The people manning the area were consistently friendly and greeted me warmly whenever I found myself needing a bathroom (as the lobby bathrooms are featured there).

I never saw the bar being in use at any point during our stay, though I didn’t hesitate to hang out there with people at night during the course of my stay.

The reception at the hotel was overwhelming, and upon our arrival we were treated to cakes, some really great lemongrass mint tea and cold towels. I’m not sure if that’s a function of SEAMC or the hotel’s regular reception, though it was appreciated, and everything was great.

There was also kofta, which I helped myself to.

The actual lobby could also be accessed through the driveway, though was adjacent to the reception area. The lobby was rather modern and featured different lights, a bakery-esque place, lots of comfortable seating, etc.

The check-in process took pretty long as we basically all arrived at the same time, though my roommate Jake and I were assigned room 800, which was on the eighth floor of the hotel. We made our way to the eighth floor (it’s worth noting that you need your key card to access every floor, so it’s a little hard to “catch” the lift if you’re trying to get to a different floor, and the stairs are often locked).

The hallways were modern, if a bit cruise ship-y.

Jake and I quickly found room 800, which was located right by the lift lobby.

The room featured an entryway, which pointed straight into the rest of the room and left into the bathroom.

The room was of a decent size for an entry level room – it wasn’t massive or anything, though was more than sufficient for our stay. It featured two comfortable beds, an armchair, a desk and chair for working, a flatscreen TV as well as quite a bit of open space.

There was ample space to move around between the beds and the TV, which is always greatly appreciated.

The beds themselves were comfortable and of chain hotel quality, which made getting out of bed at morning an arduous process. 😉

I quite liked the lighting in the room, which made it seem warm and modern.

The chair itself was comfortable for working, and the desk was wide enough. I appreciated the power port by the desk – the power ports at this room are well placed, as they’re situated by the bed and by the desk. It’s worth noting that the power ports by the bed aren’t universal, though.

The armchair itself was comfortable enough for working when I was feeling tired though still wanted to be productive.

I really appreciated the view from our room, as it gave a pretty clear view of the Jakarta skyline (or lack thereof). It’s worth noting that the aforementioned “tree” blocked quite a bit of the view from rooms left of ours.

The bathroom itself was also well appointed, and featured a toilet, sink and a walk-in shower.

I quite liked the design below the sink, which was pretty swanky.

The shower itself featured a rainforest shower with decent water pressure.

While I was fine with it (I always consistently use rainforest showers when there’s the option), I’m sure some people would prefer a handheld shower.

The only thing I found dated in the room at all was the soap holder, which could have been much better constructed, in my opinion. From the picture below alone you’d think that the hotel was built 40 years ago, while the rest of it was rather modern.

I also didn’t like how the shower controls were by the shower instead of the other side, so you got sprayed with water every time. Those are pet peeves, though.

The shower itself featured hotel-branded amenities that were refilled every time during housekeeping, which I found a nice touch. Sadly, the amenities were average at best.

Overall, I found the room very nicely appointed, and I know it normally charges cheap prices so I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again in the future. I can’t really pinpoint anything disappointing about how the room was laid out (well, apart from the soap holder).

The amenities in the room were plentiful – while there wasn’t a minibar, there was plenty of water with complimentary tea and coffee.

There was also a message welcoming us to the room and explaining that breakfast would be served at the ballroom. I’m not sure if that’s how it normally works at the hotel, though the ballroom was adequate for the few days we had breakfast there.

The only amenity we really used throughout the stay was breakfast, which was great in terms of both quantity and quality. While I was taking pictures, the attendant invited me to take pictures of their “local Indonesian food”. I thanked her for that, and started snapping away – though unfortunately I didn’t get great pictures of their Western spread.

Service throughout breakfast was super attentive, and plates were cleared within a minute of leaving the table, and only if they were empty. I know that some people don’t eat everything on their plate, but I do, and I hate when full plates of food are taken away when I have to visit the bathroom, etc.

Service throughout the hotel was equally attentive and helpful – I lost the SEAMC tote bag one day, and while I never found it, the hotel was happy to help all the time.

Bottom Line

The Atria Hotel Gading Serpong is such a solid option at Jakarta, and I can’t recommend it enough. No matter if I was coming on a school trip or with family, I’d make an effort to stay here. That said, some of the luxury hotels are also pretty cheap, so I wouldn’t imagine they’d command that much of a price premium.

I’d return in a heartbeat.

  1. It’s good that you enjoyed your stay in Jakarta, Alvin, particularly at Hotel Atria. I think it’s a bit far from the tourism spots in Jakarta, so people who stay there need to have their own rented car for a best experience. Did you enjoy the Indonesian breakfast?

    1. @ Matius – I was quite busy in the mornings, so didn’t get a large sample size of the breakfast spread. Everything I did have was great, though.

As for transport we had event-arranged transport at all times, so no complaints there, and it’s in the middle of Tangerang, which is a pretty bustling part of Jakarta. We didn’t actually get to visit Jakarta, so I can’t speak for that.
