First Impressions of the Westin Chain

While I’ve spent half my life at Sheratons and Ws, I’m at the bottom end of my second Westin stay (my first stay was as a little child that thought all hotels were branded “AIA” – don’t ask).

The brand has given me mixed feelings, and I definitely have a different perception of the brand as I had before the stay.

I’ll start with the most important things, and I’ll move down from there.

Westin Heavenly Beds

The hotel advertises that there are Westin Heavenly beds in our room, but I’m not so sure about that.

Now, I’m a huge fan of Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds. I was really excited about my bed at the Sheraton Macao, and the downside was that it was hard to get out of bed the next day.

I’ve heard that even those suckers aren’t of the same caliber as Westin Heavenly beds.

I really don’t think so, as the beds are kind of firm. They remind me of Hyatt beds, which really aren’t that special.

On the plus side, the sheets are phenomenal – it’s just that the mattress itself wasn’t every bit as good as I expected.

I’m not 100% sure if it’s a Heavenly bed (the Westin Nagoya Castle features rock hard beds, and the hotel advertises those beds as Westin Heavenly beds), so I’d like to give them another try soon.

Westin Service And Amenities

I find the service at this hotel to be up and down all the time – just after I was about to write a post about how meticulous service was, the cleaning crew forgot to restock our empty toiletries.

Speaking of the toiletries, I found Sothys amenities to be pretty good but rather confusing. It took me a while to find out that “shampooing conditioner” was shampoo with conditioner in it and “shower cream” was body wash and not post-shower cream.

Westin Breakfast Spreads

Admittedly it’s different at every individual hotel, but the spread is great.

How off base am I? What are your thoughts on Westin?
