Shangri-La is regarded as an international hotel brand and has some gorgeous properties around the world including the Shangri-La Villingili Island, Shangri-La The Shard and Shangri-La Paris. However, they have some less than stellar properties in China…
Take a look at Golden Flower Xi’an by Shangri-La which is one of their two properties in Xi’an (the other being the actual Shangri-La).

It’s not terrible. However, compare that even with The Shangri-La Guilin, which is considered to be a middle of the road property…

I guess Shangri-La is like Thai Airways in terms of cabin crew service. They have the Singapore Airlines-esque cabin crew who serve everything with a beaming smile and are extremely warm and polished…then they have the extremely indifferent crew members who could give Ms Peggy on US Airways a run for her money…
Same goes for Ritz-Carlton Hotels which try to “exceed our expectations” and “anticipate our every need”…take a look at the Ritz-Carlton Seoul.

Not exactly The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore…

To say that there’s a huge difference would be an understatement.
It is understandable that some properties are newer than others, but it wouldn’t be hard for large chains like Hyatt to renovate some of their older properties.
